Because you might be eating five fruits and vegetables each day doesn’t mean you are getting the most benefit to your health. Choosing those fruits and veggies that supply the most nutrients, vitamins and fiber can go a long way towards reducing ones risk of chronic disease. In an article published by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Dr. Nanney gives some suggestions for alternatives to the most commonly consumed fruits and veggies. According to Dr. Nanney, substituting cauliflower for potatoes, red leaf lettuce in the place of iceberg lettuce and carrots instead of corn can go a long way in reducing ones risk of chronic diseases. On the fruit side of things think about picking out strawberries instead of apples or cantaloupes and oranges in place of bananas. Opting for these powerhouse fruits and vegetables instead of the more traditional choices says Dr. Nanney, are the best way to get the most value and power from your choices in the produce department.
