High blood sugar levels are usually associated with eating a lot of enriched (white) products and foods with a lot of added sugars (candies, sugary cereals, desserts, etc.). Foods that contain a higher amount of fiber—whole grain foods, fruits and veggies—tend to not affect the blood sugar levels as easily. Therefore, fresh and frozen fruits or any form of fruit of vegetables (fresh, frozen, canned, dried or 100% juice) are a better option for controlling blood sugar levels. One way to determine how a certain food may affect blood sugars levels is to determine it’s glycemic index (GI). Foods with a higher GI spike the blood sugar levels. Foods with a low GI maintain normal levels of blood sugar. (Of course, if you eat a mixture of food, like in a meal, it will have a different GI than any individual food.) Most fruits and vegetables are considered low GI foods and help to maintain normal levels! Enjoy your fruits and veggies each and everyday and make sure you are meeting your daily recommendation!
