Q. I have hypothyroism and I have been using kale for juicing. I just learned that I need to not use cruciferous vegetables. What do you suggest I use that has similar nutritional qualities? thanks jean
A. Cruciferous vegetables have some unique characteristics, but plenty of other vegetables (and fruit) are great too, like beets, spinach, leafy lettuces, carrots, peppers, onions, and asparagus. Every fruit/vegetable has its own unique set of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients so it’s best to ‘mix it up’ so that you get a variety every day to be sure you get all of the beneficial compounds. Cruciferous vegetables do contain goitrogens, which in large amounts can suppress thyroid function, but cooking the vegetables reduces that impact.
