Probiotics refer to live microorganisms that are added to fermented foods (i.e. yogurt). These microorganisms are thought to be beneficial to the human GI tract. When a yogurt claims to have probiotics, this means that these microorganisms have been added to the yogurt. All yogurts contain a certain amount of probiotics that naturally occur in fermented foods, but the yogurts that are sold as “probiotic yogurt” contain more of the beneficial bacterias.
