Canned veggies

Need suggestions for reducing the sodium in canned vegetables. Was reading some cans in the pantry today and realized that some canned soups and vegs are loaded with salt and sugar.

  1. I am a Registered Dietitian and get this question a lot in my clinic. If you drain and rinse the canned vegetables or canned beans, you will reduce the sodium by roughly 30%. To reduce the sodium in your soups, you will need to drain the liquid and replace it with water or sodium free broth or sodium free boullion (Herb-Ox makes sodium free chicken and beef boullion granules) and water. Hope this helps!
