Typical lunch for my grandson is 1 slice of bread, one string cheese, 6 oz mild. He turns down the meatballs or hot dogs he requested. He strips bun from cheeseburger and eats the bun but not the burger. he is 4 and a half and is losing weight. He is very active but is not hungry. Cause for concern?

It’s great that your grandson is very active! Little children have little stomachs and do better with little snacks throughout the day instead of 3 large meals. If your grandson does not care for meat, snacks can include other sources of protein such as eggs, fish dried peas and beans or peanut butter. Include whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables as well. You can find kid-friendly recipes in our recipe section here and Top 10 fruit snacks for kids here. Young children shouldn’t normally lose weight however. They may get thinner as they get taller during a growth spurt and so may appear to be losing weight, but if he actually weighs less on the scale, it may be best to check with his doctor.
