I have PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome). I want ot start eating healthier and I just dont know where to start. My doctor told me I had to lose weight. Can you help me?

Good for you for wanting to take an active role to better your health—that’s half the battle!  We can definitely help you with where to start!

As you know, PCOS is characterized by hormonal imbalance, and weight gain is a common symptom.  Many women with PCOS also suffer from insulin resistance which can increase the risk of long-term health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.  If you are in fact overweight, even a modest weight loss may help to reduce these risks.

Regular physical activity and a healthy eating plan that incorporates lots of delicious fruits and vegetables are great general goals for anyone interested in trying to get fit and maintaining a healthy weight. Specifics on personalizing these goals to suit you and your condition should come from a one-on-one counseling session with a registered dietitian (RD) who is familiar with PCOS, working in conjunction with your healthcare practitioner.  They can monitor your progress and offer suggestions as you work toward your personal goals.  To find an RD in your area, click here for the American Dietetic Association’s “Find a Nutrition Professional”.

  1. Doctors often tell us (women with PCOS) to lose weight and things will be better. While its true, losing weight does help insulin resistance (which causes the excess weight gain in the first place), the IR also makes it incredibly difficult to lose excess weight. Eating a low GI diet is the best thing you can do to fight/control insulin resistance. There are also some insulin sensitizing medications (like Metformin) and/or herbs/natural supplements you can use to help your body get rid of the weight and control your insulin resistance.
