Is vitamin K safe while on Cumadin?

Coumadin is a drug that helps prevent blood clots from forming in the body. Since Vitamin K works to form blood clots, Coumadin’s job is to decrease the activity of Vitamin K.  In order for Coumadin to work properly, the diet must have a consistent amount of Vitamin K each day.  If you were to have a sudden increase in Vitamin K in your diet, the drug would have a decreased effect on the body, and vice versa.

  1. I’m learning every day about Coumadin and what you can and cannot eat while taking it. I haven’t seen anything regarding Peas and Green Beans. Am I correct in that these shouldn’t be eaten either as they are dark green? I’ve also heard butter and mayo shouldn’t be eaten when taking Coumadin. Is there any way of getting a list of what is O.K. and what it not? Thanks for very much for what you’ve posted so far.
