if i make a smoothie with 1 med. banana, apple & pear. Does this count as 1 portion of my five a day (as its a juice) or does it counts as 3 portions. Many thanks for your help.

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

It would count as 3 or more (depending on the size of the fruit) servings if the whole fruit is included in the smoothie. If you juice the fruit, ½ cup of juice would count as a serving.

What veggies are highest in protein?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Dried beans, peas and legumes such as kidney beans, chick peas, black beans and lentils have a relatively high protein content compared to other vegetables. They are high in fiber, contain almost no fat by themselves, and are a healthy way to get protein in the diet.

It is my understanding that the new recommendation for fruits and veggies is 9-14 servings. But when I look at the website of the various organizations, cancer, heart… I’m finding that it is still 5. So, what is the recommendation. And, when dealing with children, is it less, or are the serving sizes just smaller? Thanks, K

I have a condition known as fissure tongue. Many fruits bother my condition because of the acidic levels in the fruit. Does dried fruit have the same levels of acidity levels as fresh fruit?

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Dried fruits will still have the acid that was in the fruit before drying. However, since they have less moisture, it may be less likely that juice from the fruit will come in contact with the tongue. You would still want to be careful that seeds don’t get caught.

How can you make the meat and potatoes guy in your life eat more? He doesn’t want to eat more fruits and veggies, just the meat!

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

If you have children, his example is important for developing good eating habits in them. Enlist his support for that reason, although there is no guarantee. If you do not have children, you can serve them, but there probably isn’t much you can do beyond that.
