I’ve heard and seen on labels that tomatoes should be unrefrigerated. I know they are more flavorful and ripen as well as over ripen quickly. But is their any other reason for such a claim? By the way, I have been juicing and have a good recipe for Avocado and oranges (1 to 5 cnt) in blender. Also I grow wheat grass but do not have a “wheat grass” juicer. So I have been adding kiwi, hand FULL of wheat grass, 1/2 avocado and oj in blender-tastes great in my opinion. Sometimes I add green tea and flax oil. To thicken sometimes I add ice and raw oatmeal and blend real good. Another good recipe is for a smoothie- 1 apple, 1 banana, flax oil, 1/2 cup raw oatmeal and cinnamon. Apple juice, ice blend well. Sometimes I add Whey protein powder. P.S. don’t forget my tomatoes question. Thank you. P.S. I also like to play around and plant seeds of the stuff I eat. They usually grow and when I lived I Florida they actually produced, such as papaya, avocado and of course the tangerines, oranges and grapefruit. Here in IL. The next thing I am going to try from seed is Strawberries? I shall see!

The reason that tomatoes should not be refrigerated is that the taste and texture deteriorate once they are chilled. If they will spoil before you use them, it’s better to refrigerate them once they are  Read More

Broccoli that is turning yellow is past its peak freshness. Try to use it while it is fresh and still green. To keep it fresh, refrigerate in a plastic bag and use within 3-5 days.

Hi,1)how to wash strawberries, blueberries & grapes? Do they have pesticide and chemicals on them?2) What is the white layer on blueberry and some grape, is it safe to eat if they still there after wash?Hope to hear soon, thank you.May

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Rinse under running water- a colander is helpful to mix them around in and make sure you rinse all surfaces. The white layer is called the bloom, and it is nature’s preservative to stop the fruit from spoiling and drying out. It is definitely safe to eat.

My husband has coronary heart disease. He had a heart attack followed by quardruple by-pass. Some heart healthy foods are counter-recommended when taking blood thinners. In addition, he is borderline diabetic. Planning meals that are heart healthy, using foods without vitamin K and avoid spiking glucose levels is quite a challenge. Do you have suggestions?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

You do have quite a challenge. I strongly suggest you consult with a registered dietitian who can help you plan meals with consideration of your husband’s medical condition. You can find one in your area by asking your physician or at http://www.eatright.org
