I have one question if you please? this is my 1200 caloriesprotein 6starches 4fruit 3fats 2milk 2veggie 2 I have been on this for 18 yrs this gives me 9 carbs may I add 1 1/2 cup of cooked veggies to give myself 10 carbs.I will not go over 4 starchesI believe that 1 1/2 cup of cooked – 1 carbolet me know please? I am using my old exchange ( in which rice and pasta are1/2 cup ) as my base and then the new one for things I needthanks Donna
One starch exchange and one fruit exchange each have 15 grams of carbohydrate. The starch group includes starchy vegetables such as potatoes, corn and peas, and one serving is ½ cup. One and one-half cups of vegetables from the vegetable group would also have 15 grams of carbohydrate. You can visit the website for the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org to view the exchanges lists and foods included in each with portion sizes. In terms of adding carbohydrate, I suggest you consult your physician, a registered dietitian or certified diabetes educator to discuss your diet with consideration of medications you may be taking, your blood sugar control, exercise , etc.
