Is eating a diet of only fruits and vegetables healthy?

Q. My 18-yr-old daughter is eating only fruits and veg. which definitely are healthy, but she isn’t eating any meat or milk or cheese and won’t take vitamins. She has started taking iron

A.
Fruits and vegetables are certainly a healthy diet choice, but other foods are also important for health. For example, vitamin B12 found in animal products is essential for optimal nutrition and is needed as a supplement by vegetarians. However, with careful planning, a vegetarian diet can be just as wholesome as a diet that includes animal products. If she would like to eat a plant based diet, I would encourage her to work with a registered dietitian to ensure that she is obtaining ideal nutrition.
