Q. Hi my husband and I both have diabetes. He was just diagnosed with it and is taking the medication Metformin for it. We would like to ask what can he drink in the morning that doesn’t have a lot of sugar? He does not drink coffee. Thank you
A. Water is always a great way to start a day. If he enjoys warm beverages, unsweetened teas would be a good choice too. If he must have sweetened tea, using a non-caloric, sugar-free sweetener is a good substitute to sugar. Fruit and vegetable juices can be added into diabetic diets as long as the carbohydrates are counted appropriately. Work with a local dietitian or certified diabetes educator to find beverages and an overall meal plan that will work for him.
