Before hitting the shelves in stores, what has to be done to fruits and vegetables to keep them fresh and safe.

Most fresh fruits and vegetables have had very little done to them before they get to the stores. Some, like packaged salads, have been washed. Some have been washed and waxed to prevent wilting. A few have been irradiated to kill harmful bacteria and delay ripening, but that would be stated on the label. Frozen fruits and vegetables have been prepared for eating- cleaned and cut up. Dried fruits and vegetables are also prepared for eating before they are dried, and fruit is washed before it is juiced.
