Do you need to remove the stickers on apples before serving?

Q: When apples are on the menu, our lunch vendor rinses the apples before sending them to our classroom sites. Since they provide over 700 lunches, they do not remove the stickers from the apples prior to washing. Should we remove them and rinse the apples again before serving them to the children?

A:  You do not need to remove the stickers before serving.  Although not intended for consumption, the stickers are edible.  They are not harmful if swallowed and will pass through the body’s system. The adhesive is food grade so there’s no need to re wash if the employees handling the fruit are following safe food handling practices.
