Food is like fashion …every year there are things that are “in style”. For example, a few years ago bowls were really hot. You still see them, but for a while every restaurant made sure they had their own version of an Asian bowl on the menu. Or, remember when kale was the “it” veggie? These are food trends and every year there are different ones. The Specialty Food Association, Whole Foods, and Pinterest released a list of the Top Food Trends to look for this year and here are a few things you can expect to see over the next 12 months:
You’ll see an increase in plant products, even in the dairy aisle. More consumers are cutting back on animal proteins as well and opting for items such as beans or tofu.
The search for snap peas on Pinterest went up by 273 percent this past year. It seems that consumers’ new snack of choices are snap pea crisps.

You’ve hearing about “juicing” and this year souping is the new trend. Look for lots of recipes for healthy soups filled with vegetables that will keep you warm this winter.
Middle Eastern Cuisine
Kebabs, dolma, and baklava are just a few common Middle Eastern dishes. Flavors like cardamom, mint, and honey will tempt your tastebuds this year. The trend is that Persian, Israeli, Moroccan, and Lebanese influences will be popular. Make sure you check them out.
Dairy Free Desserts
Another big search on Pinterest last year was for vegan desserts. Look for consumers to be cutting out a lot of dairy this year and going with more fruit-based desserts.
Keep an eye out for these trends in the upcoming weeks and I’ll be back next week with some great recipes using frozen fruit and veggies that are ideal during the winter months.
