What fruits & vegetables are OK for someone on dialysis?


Q. I was given a sample of the fruits and veggies 2go. I would like to know if there is a potassium content you can share with me. My son is on dialysis, and as a result cannot eat too many of these foods due to the potassium content in their natural state. If this product is not high in potassium, I can use this to help supplement his diet. Thank you.


A. I did a little bit of research on Nutrilite’s Fruit & Vegetables 2 GO product that you mentioned and came up empty handed in regards to potassium values. I would encourage you to contact the manufacturer in order to get accurate information on potassium content levels. Some fruits and veggies are low in potassium (less than 100 mg potassium in ½ cup) and might be a suitable alternative for supplementing his diet. These include: applesauce, blueberries, cranberries, ½ a medium lemon or lime, pears, cabbage, cucumber, green beans, leeks, iceberg lettuce, water chestnuts, and bamboo shoots. You can also check out our fruit and vegetable nutrition charts as a quick reference for potassium values. Know that FDA has proposed adding potassium to the nutrition facts panel on food labels, in part so that people on dialysis can determine how much is in their food. We’ll know in a year or two whether or not this change will occur.
