There are many foods that can fit into a diet for diabetes. Some foods naturally contain carbohydrate, and fruits and dairy products contain carbohydrate in the form of sugar. Read the ingredient label to find out if sugar has been added to the food – these foods are best to avoid. Some forms of added sugar on the ingredient label include sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids, and fructose. I encourage you to speak with a dietitian or certified diabetes educator to learn how to select foods for your diet. You can find one at www.eatright.org. Some local hospitals may also conduct free classes for people with diabetes so that they can learn how to manage their diet and diabetes.
