My husband is a diabetic and loves eating fruit. He has been eatings delicious apples and red grapes. His blood sugar has become high. What type of apple would effect his blood sugar the least and how often should he eat one. Also, would grapes effect his blood sugar level.I am new at trying to figure out what fruits he is allowed to eat and what portions.

All fruits can be worked into a meal plan for diabetes, but since they do contain carbohydrate, the portions need to be controlled. Blood sugar responses to different foods vary for everyone and are affected by factors such as medications for diabetes and exercise. The American Diabetes Association has some resources for meal planning. However, I strongly suggest that you consult a registered dietitian or certified diabetes educator, who can help design an appropriate meal plan based on the medical profile, and teach how to manage blood sugars. Your physician may be able to recommend someone, or you can find a registered dietitian at
