Is it okay to eat fruit from a diseased tree?

Q. Hi, my chokecherry has black knot disease. Is the fruit safe to eat? Thanks.

A. Black knot affects the tree and not the fruit; however I am not an expert in horticulture. It would be wise to inquire with a Master Gardner in your area or your local University Extension Office for more information.
