What does folate do for the body? I have been craving broccoli (and bought some cauliflower because it looked so good to me). What are the benefits? Thank you for providing this website!

Folate is important in reactions involving metabolism of amino acids and synthesis of DNA, the body’s genetic material.  Women of childbearing age need to be sure to obtain adequate amounts of folate to prevent neural tube defects in their offspring, which are abnormalities in the brain or spinal cord that occur during fetal development.  Low intakes of folate have also been associated with heart disease and certain types of cancer.
