What is plant sterols?

Plant sterols are compounds from some plants that reduce the amount of cholesterol absorbed in your intestine. They are added to spreads such as Benecol™, Taking Control™ and Phytrol™ and have been found to reduce blood cholesterol levels when the spreads are used instead of butter and margarine.
